Padded Laptop Case for The Nerd
A couple weeks ago Evan, better known as “the nerd” from A Nerd Like Me, challenged me to make her a padded laptop case for her mini Netbook. I wasn’t sure I was up for the challenge but decided to give it a try. I don’t have any instructions because I really didn’t know how I was going to make at any step of the way. Evan asked me if I could make it with straps and pockets so at each step of the way and with every needle I broke(5 in all), I found myself wondering if it would ever be completely done. And alas it is finished.
The best part about this project is that it is of course 100% recycled!
Sewing something padded and so thick is a bit hard on the poor little needles. This is where a question for all you knowledgeable sewers comes in – Is there a special needle I need to use when sewing multiple layers? Please help me with this.
As you are all seeing this post I will be living it up in California! Hopefully in Disneyland because I could us a little of that happiness that seems to permeate through that place.
Hope you like it Evan – you should receive it today!

Great job! Love the fact that you used recycled materials too! O.k. if your having that many problems with needles in ultra thick stuff… try a jeans needle! They are stronger and if you go with a tad bit longer stitch that may help too…. ohhhh, and maybe slow down on your speed of the machine too… going a bit slower can really help!
One more thought…. have you seen this cute little tool… called a jean-a-ma-jig…. it’s a little item that you put behind your presser foot when sewing the hems in jeans or denim…. it allows you to sew over the huge hump that is made when you have several layers of denim. It works wonders! Check it out at the local Hancock Fabrics or Joanne’s or well on line!
YES I LOVE IT!!! Posting about it today!
