DIY – Criss Cross Coasters Tutorial

Over at Allsorts I found this tutorial on Criss Cross Coasters. I loved the way they looked and thought I should give them a try.

They actually are pretty easy if you have a rotary cutter, which I don’t. So I cut as straight a line as I could until I got as many squares as I needed. It consists of making 5 squares for each coaster, in contrasting colors, in which I used all recycled material found at the thrift stores. It’s not always easy to find 3 different colors of materials that all go together and contrast each other.

Click here for the full tutorial.

The ones in the photos from Allsorts look so nice and flat and perfectly square but mine came out a little bumpy. I havent poked them with pencils and ironed them yet so I am sure they will look better after those processes.

Oh…..get a rotary cutter. I fumbled through quite a few sewing projects thinking a pair of Fiskers should be able to “cut it.” After having too many slightly diamond shaped projects (rather than square) I decided to ask for one for my birthday. Hancocks frequently has a coupon for 40% off a notions item.

P.S. You might as well get a mat too :) …I tried to think of something that I already had that I could use as one, but never came up with anything. (Unless you have an old mat that you put under office chairs that you could cut down.) Great posts! Keep then up.

Kari,

Thanks for the advice, I have an anniversary and birthday coming, I will make sure and ask for one. I know it would make my sewing projects go much smoother.
